Massachusetts to Address Nursing Education Capacity
BALTIMORE, MD - The nation is facing an unprecedented nursing shortage
that increases costs and threatens the health care of hundreds of
millions of Americans, including 78 million aging baby boomers. In
Massachusetts, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development
has identified that there are 4,581 nurse vacancies across all patient
care settings for a vacancy rate of 6%. This shortage is expected to
grow to 12% in within two years (2010) and reach 20% by 2020. Recent
Board of Registration in Nursing data demonstrates a 5% increase in
nursing program enrollments while there is a 14% vacancy rate among
nursing faculty. As a result, nursing schools turned away 3,475
qualified students in 2007.
