Cost Containment / Payment Reform
Healthcare costs in the United States are growing at unsustainable rates. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services reports that healthcare expenditures in the United States surpassed $2.2 trillion in 2007, more than three times the $714 billion spent in 1990, and over eight times the $253 billion spent in 1980.

MHA's Statement
The Massachusetts Hospital Association is conducting ongoing research into the factors behind rising healthcare costs in the Commonwealth, and possible solutions to this extremely thorny problem. Our results point to the need for simultaneous action on three related fronts: reducing clinical variation; payment reform; and administrative simplification. All healthcare stakeholders must be active participants in taking on these issues.
