Milton, MA – December 19, 2016– Richard Fernandez – a health care executive with more than 20 years of experience across community hospitals, large physician groups, health care systems and academic medical centers – has been named President and Chief Executive Officer of Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton).  He will join BID-Milton January 30.

Fernandez currently serves as Senior Vice President of Ambulatory Services for Brigham and Women’s Health Care, where he is responsible for the strategy, operations and financial performance of the ambulatory services program.  He was previously Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Steward Medical Group, where he was responsible for the strategic direction and management of the hospital-employed physician groups and management service organization.

“We’re delighted to have Rich join Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton as our new President and CEO,” said Michael Brady, Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Directors. “He brings a breadth and depth of executive management and operating experience that will serve the hospital and our community well.  Rich is proven leader who will help us continue the strong progress we have made over the last several years.”

“Our community hospitals are vital to Beth Israel Deaconess’ commitment to providing extraordinary patient care close to home,” said Kevin Tabb, MD, President and CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.  “In Rich, we know we will have an experienced leader who will be keenly focused on BID-Milton as well as its pivotal role in our larger system, one that keeps care in the community whenever possible and offers streamlined access to specialists at our downtown medical center for patients who need it.  We’re very pleased to welcome Rich to the Beth Israel Deaconess family.”

Fernandez lives in Needham with his family and serves on the Little League baseball Board of Directors.

Fernandez will replace Peter Healy, who will leave BID-Milton at the end of the year to assume the newly created position of President of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. During Healy’s tenure, BID-Milton was one of the fastest growing community hospitals in the state, and earned national recognition for health care quality and patient safety.  It added almost two dozen new specialist physicians to its medical staff and recorded positive financial results five years in a row.

“Pete did a fantastic job as President and CEO of BID-Milton, driving the hospital’s growth and leading the integration efforts with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center,” Brady added. “Pete’s leadership, his ability to attract top management talent and his personal connection to the communities the hospital serves means that his impact will be felt long after his tenure at Milton ends.”

Michael Conklin, the Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer for the hospital, will serve as interim President and CEO during the month of January.
