contractual affiliations: usually involve a written agreement but no change in ownership or control of the hospitals.

holding company affiliations: generally involve the transfer of control of one organization to the parent company of another through by-law amendment changes, allowing both to operate as affiliates or subsidiaries of the parent company.

mergers: typically result in a single corporate identity, CEO, and board of trustees.
