SUMMARY:Why Your Hospital’s Collaboration Is Critical to Life-Saving Organ Donation
DESCRIPTION:This event has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin MHA and New England Donor Services to learn how seamless collaboration between hospitals and Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) can save lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTakeaways: \n\n\n\n\nOrgan donation and transplantation have increased substantially in the U.S. and regionally over the past five years.\n\n\n\nHigh performance in the system relies on close collaboration for early referral of all potential donors from hospitals to the OPO.\n\n\n\nAuthorization for organ donation improves when the OPO and hospital teams work together to approach families.\n\n\n\nInnovations in donation have enabled the use of organs from medically complex and older donors for the benefit of patients awaiting transplants.

SUMMARY:Medicare’s New Mandated Transforming Episode Accountability Model
DESCRIPTION:This event has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn August 2024\, CMS finalized the Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM)\, a mandatory episode-based “bundled payment” model. Thirty-eight hospitals in Massachusetts are required to participate in this program\, starting just over a year from now. The five-year TEAM model will begin on January 1\, 2026\, affecting payments for five surgical procedures: lower extremity joint replacement\, surgical hip femur fracture treatment\, spinal fusion\, coronary artery bypass graft\, and major bowel procedures. CMS aims to improve the quality of care while reducing Medicare spending for beneficiaries undergoing these high-expenditure\, high-volume surgical procedures\, which together account for more than 11% of inpatient prospective payment system payments. \n\n\n\nThe TEAM model shares similarities with previous CMS bundled payments\, such as the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model. Providers will be at risk financially for episodes of care during a hospital inpatient stay or outpatient procedure and for post-discharge services\, such as skilled nursing facility stays and follow-up visits. Participants will continue to bill Medicare under the fee-for-service model but will receive risk-adjusted target prices based on episode category and region. Payments will be adjusted for quality performance\, determined by historic Medicare episode spending and a 1.5–2% discount factor. \n\n\n\nNow is the time for hospitals to understand and prepare for the effects of this program. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the webinar\, MHA’s data partner\, DataGen\, will: \n\n\n\n\n· Present an overview of the TEAM model. \n\n\n\n· Discuss strategies for preparing for TEAM implementation. \n\n\n\n· Share resources hospitals can use to begin preparation now.

SUMMARY:TEFCA and the Future of Health Data Exchange
DESCRIPTION:This event has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will describe the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA) and its implementation. Congress directed the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (now the Assistant Secretary for Technology Policy) to collaborate with federal agencies within U.S. Health & Human Services to create a trusted exchange framework\, including a common agreement among health information networks nationwide. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Qualified Health Information Networks in TEFCA work with covered entities\, business associates\, state agencies\, and others to facilitate secure data exchange for various use cases\, including treatment\, payment\, healthcare operations\, public health\, government benefits determinations\, and individual access services. The webinar will cover the structure of TEFCA\, its governance\, the “rules of the road\,” and highlight legal issues relevant to hospitals and other participants.

SUMMARY:Enhancing Privacy in the Post-Dobbs Era
DESCRIPTION:This event has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the wake of the Dobbs decision and the 2024 election\, there has been a concerted effort at both the state and federal levels to strengthen privacy protections for patient care and health information in response to the significantly altered legal landscape surrounding reproductive rights. These efforts aim to safeguard sensitive data from unauthorized access and ensure the confidentiality and security of individuals’ medical information. This webinar will examine the current reproductive health privacy landscape\, compare states’ varying approaches\, and highlight legal issues relevant to hospitals and other stakeholders. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nParticipants in this webinar will:\n\n\n\n1. Understand the current and prospective state and federal regulatory efforts to shield providers and recipients of reproductive health services from out-of-state investigations. \n\n\n\n2. Learn about key aspects of the existing rules governing privacy of sensitive health information. \n\n\n\n3. Possess the information necessary to assess their own organization’s readiness to ensure compliance with\, and support of\, patient privacy requirements.

SUMMARY:The Blue Cross Provider Settlement:  What Does it Mean?  What Do I Do?
DESCRIPTION:This event has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAfter 12 years of litigation\, antitrust claims against Blue Cross Blue Shield that resulted in hospital underpayments from 2008-24 were recently settled. But the settlement terms are opaque and may represent\, for some hospitals\, just a fraction of valuable claims.  What should you do?  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this webinar join Cy Smith and Bill Schultz\, who oversaw the parallel\, highly successful Blue Cross litigation on behalf of insurance subscribers. You’ll learn: \n\n\n\n\nThe pluses and minuses of “opting out” of the settlement with other hospitals and pursuing a direct claim.\n\n\n\nHow we got here and what’s in the provider settlement.\n\n\n\nHow hospital claims are calculated under the settlement.

SUMMARY:Dissecting the CrowdStrike Failure Event: Assuring Readiness for the Inevitable Failure of Complex Systems
DESCRIPTION:This event has concluded. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe CrowdStrike Failure Event on July 19\, 2024\, rendered approximately 8.5 million Windows computers across the world unusable\, including 45\,000 devices across the Mass General Brigham system. While ambulatory visits and non-essential surgical procedures were cancelled on the first day\, Mass General Brigham was back to full operational capacity within 24 hours. It is undeniable that unplanned outages of information systems\, whether from cyberattacks or technical malfunctions\, will continue to occur and that the consequences of these failures will be felt by patients unless appropriate mitigation and continuity measures are in place. \n\n\n\nIn this discussion\, we will review the successes and opportunities for improvement identified in MGH’s response to the CrowdStrike incident. We will also discuss how healthcare systems can adopt best practices in cybersecurity preparedness\, disaster recovery planning\, emergency management planning\, and business continuity planning to embrace resilience and to reduce the overall impact of future disruptions when complex systems inevitably fail. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTake-aways: \n\n\n\n• Understand how trends in healthcare IT systems are increasing vulnerabilities. \n\n\n\n• Analyze digital downtime events through the lenses of patient safety and operational continuity. \n\n\n\n • Identify critical opportunities for healthcare systems to collaborate among digital\, information security\, and emergency preparedness leaders to mitigate vulnerabilities and optimize response to downtime events.
