MEMBER MOMENTS: Berkshire Health’s Leary on Rural Healthcare Challenges

Berkshire Health System’s Director of Media Relations Michael Leary was featured this week on The Codcast, the weekly 30-minute podcast from CommonWealth Beacon.
The state’s Boston-centric media market often overlooks what’s going on west of Worcester, but Leary and reporter Jennifer Smith delved into, as Commonwealth Beacon says, “what makes Berkshire County such a complicated puzzle of healthcare access, even with the re-opening of the North Adams Hospital after a decade of closure.”
In the episode, Leary discusses the how the organization addresses the work of rural healthcare delivery, challenges with recruiting staff, and health policy changes on the federal level.
“We are keeping a very close eye on [the Medicaid cuts] and whatever impact it would have here on the Berkshires,” Leary said in the podcast. “We are very fortunate to have had a very good sustainable financial model for a number of years now. We consider ourselves to be a very good financial performer. It doesn’t mean that we’re not worried, it doesn’t mean that we’re not challenged, but we are keeping an eye on everything, and we will continue to serve our patients as best we can.
