Tufts Medical Center was featured in the Boston Business Journal (BBJ) this week in an article focusing on the facility’s increase in the number of adult heart transplants it performed in 2024.

Tufts’ Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Program completed 70 heart transplants in 2024, up from 61 in 2023.

The BBJ article also noted that in 2023, Beth Israel Lahey Health launched its own heart transplant program, which performed 40 transplants in 2024.

“Boston has long been the hub of heart transplant in the northeast,” Dr. Indranee Rajapreyar, medical director of cardiac transplantation at Tufts said in a statement to the BBJ.

Tufts Medical Center also relaunched its liver transplant program in 2024. According to the article, the hospital’s transplant programs “are important to the hospital and health system’s bottom line and contribute significantly to the hospital’s revenue margins.”
